| HONOR, kept |
"Honor is easier kept than recovered."
This adage is true, whether it relates to an individual's
reputation or an artifact symbolizing an accomplishment.
With the Montclair School District's approval, some MHS alumni
have been recovering many awards and trophies from a basement
area of the high school.
While some of these trophies are broken or their facades are
tarnished, they embody a resounding reputation. For more than a
century, the academic and athletic accomplishment of Montclair
High School students and coaches were legendary.
These student/athletes' acclaimed feats must be honored forever.
The rescued trophies represent an era when awards were given for
accomplishments, not for merely attending. They were not the
"feel-good" awards of our age. Each of these medals meant a
person or group of participants achieved greatness.
Several families who hail from Montclair recognize the
importance to the United States of well-rounded students who
excel in academic and athletic skills. The Furlong family, Josh
and Judy Weston, John Whitehead and the family of the late John
McMullen are donating millions of dollars to upgrade and expand
the field house at Woodman Field.
It is paramount that either Montclair High School or the new
field house provide sufficient viewing space to exhibit these
recovered awards and all future medals earned by MHS
student/athletes.
Each award represents the achievement of an athlete, a team, a
class and Montclair High School itself.
